Shower Valve Rough-In: Shower Valve Height & Installation From Floor or Tub

In my experience, shower valve rough-in comes up in almost every bathroom remodel I quote. If done wrong, fixing it later means cutting open finished drywall. What Is a Shower Valve Rough-In?
A shower valve rough-in is the plumbing done before the wall surface goes on. It involves positioning the valve body, running the hot and cold lines to it, and fastening it to the blocking so that the valve will be plumb and in position after the wall surface is installed. The rough-in stage happens behind the wall surface before any trim or finish has been added. If the rough-in is wrong, the valve center may end up stuck behind the tile or sticking out proud of the plate. If it's right, the trim plate and handle will fit the wall perfectly with no gaps.
Common Types of Shower Valves
The two big decisions when selecting a shower valve are how you are going to adjust the shower temperature and how many outlets you need to supply. Some manufacturers call this part a shower faucet, but it's still the same thing. In terms of temperature control, the choice is either a pressure-balancing or a thermostatic valve. Pressure-balancing is more common. The idea is that it adjusts to keep the hot/cold balance so that if someone flushes the toilet elsewhere in the house, you don't get a sudden temperature change. A thermostatic one has a dial to select and hold the exact temperature you want. For outlets, a valve may handle just the showerhead or multiple outlets simultaneously (like tub spouts or diverters in the same system). A diverter valve switches water between outlets, such as a tub spout and a fixed shower head (useful if you've got both of them). Multi-outlet valves can supply more complex shower systems at once, like body sprays or rain showerheads, and they require more substantial plumbing to maintain water pressure. Integrated systems combine the main valve and outlet switching mechanism in a single rough-in body.
Standard Shower Valve Height
The height for valves in a residential application is typically 38-48" above the floor to the center of the valve. Most plumbers will install at 48" for ease of use. However, IPC does not specify a minimum/maximum height, so be sure to check your local codes before final installation. Although Washington adopted the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code with state amendments, in effect statewide since March 2024, exact requirements still vary by jurisdiction and manufacturer.
Adjusting Height for Different Shower Systems
Valve height is first and foremost determined by the shower type and the height of the people using it daily.
Shower Type
Horizontal Spacing and Wall Depth Requirements
The common approach is to install the valve below the showerhead, going straight up with the supply line, allowing enough vertical room between the spout and the showerhead so the plate assemblies don't interfere with each other. It can all depend on the fixtures, framing, etc. Manufacturer's specifications on the range of the valve set the rough-in dimension. The range is the distance from the face of the stud to the finished wall surface that the valve can accommodate. The depth of the wall cavity is certainly a factor, though it needs to be sufficient to accommodate the valve body itself. A 2x4 wall will provide approximately 3.5 inches of depth, and a 2x6 wall will provide approximately 5.5 inches, though some valves (thermostatic/high-flow) may require greater depths. The finished wall isn't intended to sit flush with the valve body. The valve will be recessed in the wall, with the trim plate and handle meeting the tile and covering the opening. Some manufacturers offer extension kits when the finished wall falls outside the valve's standard rough-in range, but availability and allowable adjustment depend on the specific valve and trim. This will help accommodate variations in wall construction without moving the valve body and maintain consistent clearance after the trim has been installed. Each fixture (spout, showerhead, and body sprays) needs its own supply path from the valve.
Shower Valve Installation Process
It starts with shutting off the water at the main valve before any cutting begins. From there, we measure and mark the valve, spout, and showerhead mounting heights on the framing, checking each against the manufacturer's specs for that valve model. Once the layout is confirmed, we attach the valve to solid blocking between the studs so it stays plumb and won't shift later, then run the hot and cold supply lines to the valve using the connection method specified for the valve and piping system, such as PEX crimp or expansion fittings, soldered or press-fit copper, or threaded connections where applicable. With everything capped, we pressure test the whole system before closing anything up and keep the valve protected through the rest of framing and drywall. The trim goes on last, once the surface is finished.
Tiling Around Shower Valves
After the tile is installed, the valve should be set back far enough so the trim plate will sit flush against the tile with no gaps. Cut the finish material with care around the escutcheon so that the opening matches the shape of the plate. If the shower has a prefab pan, the exact height will need to be determined before the rough-in is marked. If the layout allows it, the access panel on the other side of the wall should be left so the plumber can service valve guts later without removing any tile.

Is There a Standard or Building Code for Shower Valve Height?
Not exactly. The International Plumbing Code (IPC) doesn't specify a valve height. Usually, plumbers follow the standard set by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), but you may have to adjust for local code requirements.
How High Should a Tub and Shower Valve Be Roughed In?
For a tub + shower setup, usually the valve is 28" above the tub deck, or roughly 38-42" off the floor. A shower-only stall is usually 42-48".
How Far Into the Wall Should a Shower Valve Be Roughed In?
There is no universal 4- to 6-inch rough-in depth. The valve must be positioned within the manufacturer's specified rough-in range relative to the finished wall. On many valves, the plaster guard, not the valve body itself, is used as the reference for the finished-wall position.
How Do You Measure Shower Valve Height Correctly?
Measure straight up from the shower's finished surface, not the subfloor beneath it, and account for the thickness of the tile and mortar bed before you set your rough-in mark. For most walk-in showers, that means roughly 48 inches above the finished floor to the center of the valve.

The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) defines accessibility standards primarily for public/commercial buildings. Many homeowners, however, refer to the ADA standards when building for aging in place or the mobility needs of a family member. One requirement for transfer showers is that the shower controls must be placed on the wall opposite the shower seat, within reach, and able to be operated with one hand.
What Are the Most Common Mistakes to Avoid When Installing a Shower Valve?
Selecting the height without consulting the needs of the intended user is one. Closing the wall prior to pressure testing is another. Also, tub-shower combos need the valve in a lower position than shower-only stalls.
